Identifying Boron Deficiency

You can identify Boron deficiency with our 'deficiency doctor'.

Many pome-fruit crops like apples and pears require an annual boron requirement of about 2Kgs/ha elemental boron. Your top-fruit agronomist can confirm your particular requirements.

Symptoms of Boron Deficiency are

  • Heart-rot in Sugar Beet
  • Hollow-stem-rot in Oil Seed Rape/ Brassicas
  • Five o'clock shadow in carrots

Soil analysis is effective at determining Boron deficiency.

Treatment

20Kgs/ha of Borax as a fertiliser or Solubor at 12 Kgs/ha give 2 Kgs/ha elemental Boron for susceptible crops. Note: Do not apply Boron unnecessarily as the boundary between adequate supply and toxicity is narrow.

At Bunns we can add Boron to any of our root fertilisers, particularly sugar beet, at the full or half rate to give whole-rotation protection from boron deficiency.
