The ADAS soil analysis indexes and lab measurements are set out below. Most other UK laboratories use the same techniques and interpretation scales.

Copper Index Lab Range [mg/l] Comment
Zero 0 - 1.6 Copper treatment required - crop loss
One 1.7 - 2.5 Copper treatment desirable - crop response
Two 2.5 - 4.0 Copper Deficiency unlikely
Three 4.0 - Soil well-supplied with copper

Identifying Copper Deficiency

Symptoms of Copper deficiency are

  • Ears having difficulty emerging from the sheaf
  • Awns of Barley white & brittle
  • Yellowing at the tip of young leaves followed by spiraling
