Course Aims

For delegates to have a basic understanding of working in confined spaces, identify such work that exists at their own site along with safe use and inspection of rescue and access equipment.

Training Objectives

By the end of the course delegates will have a basic understanding of the employees and employers duty under the Work in Confined Space Regulations 1997.
  • Understand hazards and risks associated with this work and be able to apply a hierarchy of control measures for carrying out such work including risk assessments, safe systems of work, permits to work and gas free certification.
  • Carry out the role of the attendant along with the implementation of first aid and emergency procedures.
  • Correctly inspect and operate harnesses, lanyards and rescue equipment used by their company.
  • Know their organisations policy on planning for and carrying out work in confined space.

Course Outline

Theory

  • Welcome and course introduction.
  • Introduction of delegates.
  • Appreciation of the duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act for employees and employer.
  • Overview of Health & Safety law regarding Work in Confined Space Regulations 1997.
  • Safe systems of work, permits, clearance certificates and the role of the confined space attendant.
  • Implementation and adherence to first aid and emergency procedures.
  • Fall protection measures and emergency and rescue procedures.
  • Health and Safety question paper and confined space scenario.
  • Lunch.

Practical

  • Inspection, examination and selection of fall arrest and rescue equipment.
  • Site inspection of confined space examples.
  • Discussion of proposed plan for the relevant planned confined space work.
  • Course summary.
  • Questions.
