MAP typically contains 11% nitrogen in the ammonium form and 52% phosphate. It is sometimes expressed as 11-52-0. MAP is made by the action of ammonia with phosphoric acid. The resulting salt is completely water-soluble.

Because the water-solubility of MAP is very high, it is used in both solid and clear-liquid fertilisers.
