Kainit is a naturally occurring ore containing about
- 11% K2O water-soluble potassium oxide (9% K)
- 5% MgO water-soluble magnesium oxide (3% Mg)
- 29% Na2O water-soluble sodium oxide (20% Na)
- 10% SO3 water-soluble sulphur trioxide (4% S)
- plus many other trace elements.
The Magnesium in Kainit is totally soluble and available at all pH's unlike Magnesium from Oxide sources, so that it is readily available to the crop when it needs it. Kainit is also cleared for use as an organic fertiliser by many of the EU's organic food standards agencies. Kainit for Sugar Beet Magnesia-Kainit is used as a 'special' fertiliser for crops with a high sodium requirement such as sugar beet. Kainit is most often used in the fertilisation of Sugar Beet, where it is commonly applied at 750 Kgs/ha in the autumn or on Grassland, where it is spread at 500 Kgs/ha in February and after each silage cut. Our specialist grassland fertilisers for silage and grazing are based on at least 500Kgs/ha Kainit, which together with other raw materials, provide an optimum balance of nitrogen, phosphate, potash, magnesium, sulphur and sodium for maximum yield and superior animal nutrition. Kainit on Grassland Routine fertilisation of grassland with Magnesia-Kainit improves the health, productivity and fertility of grazing animals by enriching the forage with magnesium and sodium. The product consists entirely of naturally occurring crude potassium salt.
German research work on the use of Kainit fertilisers on grassland has proved a link to better cow fertility from cows fed Kainit-fertilised grass owing to a better balance of salts in their blood. The grass also tastes better to the cows resulting in higher dry matter intakes. Early use can also reduce the risk of grassland staggers owing to the soluble magnesium content. See our Sugar Beet and Supergrass fertiliser pages for details of our fertilisers containing Kainit - True Kainit cannot be compared with so-called Kainit-substitutes which do not benefit from soluble magnesium, sulphur and are liable to segregate upon spreading. Only Bunns can supply true Kainit
- At Bunns, we often top-up the Kainit with other raw materials like Muriate of Potash or Triple Superphosphate in our Magsol fertiliser range. The resulting mix can supply all the nutrients for th sugar beet crop in a single application.
Note: Kainit should not be used on potatoes, where the sodium content will cause crop damage. Organic Approved with prior permission
