MAP typically contains 11% Nitrogen in the Ammonium form and 52% Phosphate. It is sometimes expressed as 11-52-0. MAP is made by the action of ammonia with phosphoric acid, the resulting salt is completely water-soluble.

Because the water-solubility of MAP is very high it is used in both solid and clear-liquid fertilisers.
